The term “blogging for profits” has a corny ring to it. Yet, it sums up our objective nicely. We aren’t blogging for the heck of it with no goal in mind. We aren’t using the blog to get things off our chest.
Instead, we blog because we have an important, valuable, and rich message we want to share with the world. We do it because of a passion we have over a topic that we can’t just keep to ourselves.
This post is going to walk you through how to make money blogging. I have broken it up into 3 sections and 15 steps (roughly 5 steps per section).
It may seem like a daunting task to go from zero to generating revenue from your blog. And in some respects, it can be daunting. Especially if you have little to no knowledge or experience in doing this before.
Rest assure that I will include some tips on how to short-cut the learning curve. With the right resources, you can get your website up and running in fairly quickly. How quick? Well, that depends on the decisions you make within each of the 15 steps.
Before we start, let’s ask ourselves the following question.
Is blogging for money right for me and my business?
Honestly, this is a vey individualized answer. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Each person has their own unique situation to bring to this endeavor.
You may have a day job and want to start looking into creating supplemental income. You have an interest in what making money online is all about and are thinking that now may be a good time to start. Yet, the income is not your main driver.
You have the passion to share your knowledge with the world. You have time to dedicate to this. You have a budget. And most importantly, you have the commitment to stick with it to completion.
But if you haven’t determined the passion that you will bring to the world. If you don’t have the time, budget, or commitment, then perhaps you are not yet ready to take on this challenge.
So before you continue reading this article, assess whether you have the right ingredients for succeeding in creating a blogging business that generates income.
This article is for folks who are realistic about starting new ventures. As with starting anything, you’re going to have some initial winners, but then beginner’s luck runs out. This is when you have to dig deep and do the things that are less fun and exciting than when you first started.
There is real work to this. And if you stick with it for the right reasons, then you have a really good chance of succeeding.
Now that we’ve laid the ground rules on who this is for and who this isn’t for, if you determined that this article is for you, then great – let’s get started!
Let’s first start with listing the 15 steps to blogging, grouped into 3 sections.
Here are the three sections:
- blogging pre-requisites
- create content
- distribute content
Let’s quickly go over each of the 3 sections.
The pre-requisites to blogging
Before you can blog (eg. create content), you have first have a blog. If you don’t already have a blog, then the first step is to create one. And the first item in create a blog is deciding on your website’s domain name. Subsequently, you must decide on your website hosting. We discuss these critical topics in detail.
Create blog posts
Let’s move on to content creation. There are many ways to create content. I will show you the good, most effective methods that are relevant today. These methods are backed by top bloggers in the content creation and marketing space.
Promote your blog posts
And after you create your content, you then have to distribute or promote it. This is how you get people to know that your content exists. This is how you build a following and eventually prospects and customers.
Lastly, I’ve added a bonus section.
Tracking, Reporting, Optimization
It is very important to track your results. This is how you will know where to direct most of your efforts. Data will show you the direction you should go. As well, it will show you what to avoid (or at least set aside for now).
There are two things you will learn to track. The first is your visitors and how many of them end up buying from you.
The second thing you will track are your costs for acquiring those visitors and sales.
I show you simple formulas to help you make good decisions in what’s working and what’s not. Again, you let data drive your decisions.
Once you are able to see the results of your blogging efforts, you will then be able to make decisions based on this data. You’ll need a large enough data set to make good decisions, but this is where optimization comes into play.
